MY EXPERIENCE

  Throughout this seminar I  was able to learn about the  ICT embedded in ELT and  how they must be integrated  into different educational  settings, according to the  curricular and pedagogical  needs. Moreover, the  presence of ICT in education  allows for new ways of  learning for students and  teachers. TED: Ideas Worth Spreading

  TED Conferences   LLC (Technology,  Entertainment, Design) is a  media organization that  posts talks online for  free distribution under the  slogan "ideas worth  spreading." Ted talks are  not mere entertaining tools  but they represent a very useful way to expand  your knowledge about a  certain topic. Teachers can choose a video about a specific topic  and work with it with their students. Different tasks  can be assigned before, during and after watching  the video.  For example, in the course of studies English  Language IV, in order to work with listening  comprehension, the teachers decided to use a TED  talk called “The danger of a single story”:  The Danger of a Single Story .  Students were given a worksheet in which they had  activities related to the main ideas, key details,  understanding sequence of events, among others

Scoop It and Pinterest

  Pinterest is a platform for  sharing images that allows  users to create and manage,  in thematic personal boards,  collections of  images. People save pins  into different boards so as to  categorize their image  collections.   Scoop is part content  curation tool, part social  network. It allows you to  create boards of curated  content based on topics you  choose, share your thoughts  on that content, and connect  with others who have similar  interests. It also structures  your curated content along a  timeline. 1st Year Students in Secondary School can be  assigned to think of their dream house. They have  to look for related images about their dream house  on Pinterest. Voki

  Voki is a fun tool that  students can use for homework, classwork or  projects. Voki characters can  be customized to look  like historical figures,  cartoons, animals, and even  yourself.  Vocaroo is an online tool  that allows users to record,  send, and download voice  messages. 4th Grade Students in Primary School can use voki  to create Voki characters that represent a monster. They can use images of different body parts,  different colors and hairstyles. Moreover, they can  give voice to their monsters by using vocaroo. Survey Monkey

  Survey Monke y is an  online survey software that  helps you to create and run  professional online surveys. 6th Grade Students in Primary School can work in  groups of four to create an online survey that helps  them gather information about their classmates’  different interests, favourite free-time activities,  colours and foods.  The following example can be used as a model: Survey Example

Word Clouds

  Word Clouds are images composed of words used in a particular text or  subject, in which the size of  each word indicates its  frequency or importance. Short Films

  A short film is any film not   long enough to be considered   a feature film. They are films   of a short duration of 40   minutes or less. Short films  can be very effective since  they make the  language learning process  more motivating and  enjoyable. By using short  films students are learning  about the language in a  specific context. Students from any age can be shown different short  films about any topic so as to work with it in the  English class.   For example, the short film called “Grammar Genius” ( Grammar Genius Video ) can be  used to work with the present simple and the  routines with 1st year students of a Secondary  School.

Collage & Banner

  Canva is an online tool that allows users to choose from  hundreds of professionally  designed layouts or create  their own designs from  scratch, to use in  presentations, posters, infographics, social  media, business cards and  much more. 3th Year Students in Secondary School can use Canva to create a collage about the story of  different sports. Including images and a description of the sport chosen. Finally, they have to show  their collages to their classmates.  The following link can be used as a model: Volleyball History

Prezi

  Prezi is a tool which allows  you to create presentation  slides by easily combining  images, texts and videos. 3th Year Students in Secondary School can work in  groups to create a presentation about different celebrations such as Christmas, New Year,  Halloween, etc. They have to include information  and images about the celebration they chose to  work with and explain to the rest of their classmates when it is the celebration, where it is celebrated, what  people celebrate, etc.  The following link can be used as a model: Halloween Prezi

Sites Collection

  A site collection is made up   of one top-level site and all   sites below it. You create a   site collection to host sites   that have something in   common. These Site   collections are a way of   organizing sites for a   common purpose. For instance, the following link   Sites Collection is an useful site collection in which teachers can have access to different tools to use in their classes.

Publication Tools

  Calaméo is a free  document publishing  platform that  creates interactive web  publications in real time.  People can upload PDF files, spreadsheets, word  documents and PowerPoint  presentations to create  reports, magazines,  catalogs, brochures, etc.  Those publications can be  shared across multiple  social networks, emailed to  friends and added to the  community where you can  get feedback from readers on  the published material. Glogster is an online  learning platform where  you can creatively express  yourself and your  knowledge. Infographic

  Infographics are  representations of  information in a graphic  format designed to make the  data easily understandable.  People use infographics to  quickly communicate a  message, to simplify the  presentation of large amounts  of data, to see data patterns and relationships easily. 6th Year Students in Secondary School can be  assigned to form groups of four and to do some  research about a specific cultural festival from any  part of the world (Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, Saint  Patrick's in Ireland, Día de los Muertos in Mexico,  etc.) Each group has to create an infographic  presenting information and showing images so as to  tell their classmates about the festival chosen.  Students can use the webpage Canva to create their  infographic. Flipped Classroom

  A flipped classroom is one  where students are  introduced to content at home, and work with it at  school. In this  approach, face-to-face  interaction is mixed with  independent study via  technology. In-class time  is dedicated to discussions,  interactive exercises, and  independent work that would have previously been  completed at home, with the  guidance of the teacher, who  is available to respond to any  doubts. Innovations in Learning Technologies for English Language Teaching

  This publication shows  how learning technologies  have developed over time  and offers a different  approach to the uses of  learning technologies in the  language classroom.  Different lesson ideas can  be found so as to adapt them  to different contexts. Photo Essay

  A photo essay is a collection  of images, usually with  supplementary text, that tells  a story and drives a  narrative over multiple images. In order to work with the topic of “Diversity”. Students from a 6th grade of a Secondary School  have to make groups of three and download  different pictures from the following webpage  Unsplash and at the same time they have  to look for information in the following webpage:  Diversity Concepts . So as to combine both the visual imagery with the  concepts, students have to work with an editor web  page such as Canva . In that  website students are provided with  different templates in which they can edit the  colors, the font, the size of their texts and create  creative slides of a picture plus the content  regarding the task. WebQuest

  A WebQuest is an inquiry oriented lesson format in   which most or all the   information that learners   work with comes from the   web. This educational  technique is an innovative  way for teachers to make  students more-enthusiastic  about tackling assignments.  A WebQuest is an inquiry based activity where students  are given a task and provided  with access to online  resources to help them  complete the task. Slide Share

  SlideShare is a slide hosting  service. It allows users to  upload files (PowerPoint,  PDF, Keynote, or Open  Document presentations)  either privately or publicly.  The slide decks can then be  viewed on the site itself or  can be embedded on other sites. Facebook Groups

  A Facebook Group is a place where you can create a group in which people can  communicate, share their  common interests and  express their opinion. They  let people come together  around a common activity to  organize, express  and discuss ideas, post  photos and videos, and share  related content. Teachers usually create Facebook groups to keep in  contact with their students. This tool not only  allows teachers to post messages for their students  but also to share files, videos, links, pictures and  whatever they consider important for their subjects  with them. Exploration of Visual Presentation Tools

  Visual tools foster creativity.  They allow people to insert  photos into a beautiful frame,  create a collage, draw a  picture, make funny photo  effects, make covers for  personal websites, decorate a  photo, etc. Visual tools can be used in a variety of ways  to aid, develop and represent  learning in a creative and fun  way. They can include  whatever they consider related to each of them  (colours, objects, words, items of clothing, etc.) and  then, they can tell their classmates which is their  favorite season (‘My favorite season is…’) and what they related it to. Ubiquitous Learning Video

  Ubiquitous learning takes  advantage of digital content,  physical surroundings,  mobile devices, pervasive  components, and wireless  communication to deliver  teaching–learning  experiences to users at  any time, anywhere, and  anyway. It spreads education  in diverse settings, where  users are situated in authentic  learning contexts to face  immersive experiences in  order to accomplish  meaningful learning. Let’s take mobile learning as an example: students  have positive perceptions about the use of their own  mobile phones as a learning tool. This tool opens  up a range of possibilities for teaching and learning  languages.   A mind map is a diagram for  representing tasks, words,  concepts, or items linked to  and arranged around a central  concept or subject.  Cacoo allows people to visually  structure their ideas, analysis  or recall during  presentations. Users can  share their diagrams with the  teacher or their classmates. 1st Year students in Secondary School can design  a mind map so as to introduce themselves including  personal information such as their name, surname,  age, likes, dislikes, hobbies, etc. The following link  can be used as a model for students to follow:

Send & Answer an E-mail

  By using electronic devices  such as phones or computers,  people can send and answer  mails thus exchanging  messages. They can also  share files by attaching them  to emails. This quick tool  improves immediate  communication since it  allows people to be  constantly in touch. By sending an email students are able to ask the  teacher about different doubts they may have as  regards a task or about the feedback they received.  This tool is also very practical to keep the students  informed about different subject matters, such as  evaluation dates, task dates, sharing YouTube videos, songs, among others.

Comment on Blog Posts

  A blog is a website  containing a writer's or group  of writers' own experiences,  observations, opinions, etc.,  and often having images and  links to other websites. Items  in blogs are regularly  uploaded and displayed in  reverse chronological order,  so that the most recent post  appears first, at the top of the  web page. There are personal  blogs, business blogs, media  blogs, etc. This is another useful tool that allows teachers and  students to be in contact outside the classroom. In 2018 during my attendance in the course of  studies Practice II, I had to create a personal blog  that allowed the teachers to follow my practices  ( https://julianaaflores.blogspot.com/ ). Share Google Drive Doc

   Google Drive is a free  personal cloud storage  service from Google that lets  users store and synchronize  digital content across  computers, laptops and  mobile devices, and which  allows participants to work  simultaneously on the same  files without being in the same place. The documents  are saved at the same time  students are working with it.  This app is limited to Gmail.  During a first approach with  this app, it may be difficult to  understand how it works if  you are not used to doing it. But  after working and practicing how to use it, it is really easy  to manage and students as  well as teachers may find it  practical because they can  have access to their documents anywhere and  anytime.     Edgar Morin, a French  philosopher and sociologist,  takes into account a series of  fundamental issues that have  been ignored or forgotten and  which are necessary for  future education. He presents  those problematic issues as  “seven complex lessons” that  should be examined in every  cultural group.
